This symposium between theorists, critics, and photographic artists is a rare opportunity to discuss the most current creative processes in the field of contemporary photography. Within the framework of the Triennale de l’Image’s overarching theme of the ecology of the senses, and more specifically through the lens of Neo-Analog, we will explore how artists have transcended the mere function of photography as an image, engaging instead with a poetry of materiality.

The aim is to understand how photography can be “concrete” rather than abstract when it dissociates itself from the image and produces a hybrid substance with materials. From elementary substances to sophisticated technologies, Neo-Analog photography seeks to establish contact with and translate a new relationship with nature. Photographer and artist Nicolas Floc’h will explain his method, which involves exploring the seabed and representing nature through the language of color and its biological significance. Laure Winants will share her method from her Antarctic expedition with a team of glaciologists, explaining how she successfully combined the oldest ice cores with the techniques of the photographic darkroom. The renowned French art critic Etienne Hatt of the journal artpress will present a range of experimental practices emblematic of an exploration of the association between the living and photographic creation, using the examples of four contemporary artists. Photographer and artist Zeng Han will take his nearly two-decade-long “Photographic Landscape Triptych” as a case study to explore contemporary expressions of “Landscape” modes of seeing in the digital age and their relevance to present-day realities. Amélie Labourdette, also an explorer, is passionate about early ferrets and plant fossils; her ecological and historical approach translates into a dialogue between landscape and object.

The presentation of these diverse artistic processes allows us to understand how analog photography is no longer merely a technical matter but a cultural one. Starting from the universal theme of the elements, we understand that if our relationship with nature is changing, our way of capturing images of it must also change.

This symposium invites you to delve deep into the world of photography. Beyond merely a tool for capturing images, it is a material practice (think of the magical processes of film, light, and development), a unique mode of perception (how it shapes our understanding of the world), and a powerful historical witness (how it connects the past and the present).

We will embark on this journey by exploring the core ideas from two inspiring exhibitions at the Guangzhou Image Triennial 2025, revealing the profound charm of photography:

Firstly, we will focus on the "materiality" of photography. In an age saturated with digital images, we often overlook the tangible elements behind photography—from film and chemical agents to light itself. These materials not only constitute the photograph but also encapsulate stories of production locations, labor traces, and unique geographical narratives. We will guide you to rediscover the profound beauty embedded in this tangible aspect of photography, and the rich narratives often obscured by the digital deluge.

Concurrently, we will explore how photography helps us "read" the Earth's history and ecology. Every click of the shutter is not just about capturing a moment; it's like etching "strata" onto the Earth's surface, silently narrating the profound impacts of human activities (such as colonialism, resource extraction, and environmental damage) on our planet. Photography can penetrate the surface, revealing the intricate web of cause and effect between historical actions and current ecological crises. We will collectively consider how photography can activate these deeply buried ecological memories, prompting us to reflect on humanity's relationship with the Earth.

This symposium will also particularly emphasize the importance of "situated knowledge and local experiences." The value of photography does not lie in pursuing a unified global perspective, but in constructing diverse and vibrant modes of perception through unique materials, the photographer's physical engagement, and the reactivation of local memories. Especially within the context of global cultural intersections, photography can become a powerful decolonial visual pathway, challenging singular Western-centric viewpoints and allowing more local voices and marginalized narratives to be seen and respected.

We are honored to host a diverse group of expert scholars who have dedicated their work to photographic creation and research. Drawing from their respective practical experiences, they will collectively discuss photography's critical role and immense potential in addressing contemporary ecological challenges, reflecting on the impact of digital culture, and constructing diverse knowledge systems. Through this interdisciplinary dialogue, we aspire to explore how photography can serve as a critical key, guiding us towards a future that is more ecologically conscious and culturally inclusive.
