Preface

值此迟轲先生百年诞辰之际,我们怀着深切的敬意与追思之心,举办“迟轲诞辰100周年文献展暨中西美术史论研讨会”。这不仅是对一位杰出的学术大家的缅怀,更是对其卓越思想和突出贡献的再认识和再出发。

迟轲先生是著名的美术史论家、原广东美学学会会长、广州美术学院终身教授,历任广州美术学院文艺理论教研室主任、美术学系主任等职,2004年被中国美术家协会授予“卓有成就的美术史论家”称号。他深研西方美术史,为中国的西方美术史研究作出了不可磨灭的贡献,其著作《西方美术史话》深入浅出,将西方艺术的壮阔图景系统、生动地带给广大中国读者,累计印数逾三十万册,影响深远;他对《西方艺术批评史》《西方美术理论文选》《西方美术事典》《罗丹笔记》等艺术理论、批评著述的引进、主编和翻译,为后来者学习和研究美术史打开了方便之门。

除了西方美术史论的撰写和翻译,迟轲先生还深入地投身到中国现代美术的评论当中,他不时地针对美术界的热点议题发表自己的看法,并为众多艺术家撰写了评述文章。他善于在中西比较的框架中进行作品分析,同时又保持着立足本土现实文脉的态度和主张。

迟先生不仅是知识的传播者,更是学科体系的建设者。他的研究与教学,为美术史专业的规范化、系统化和本土化发展,奠定了重要的理论基础与实践路径。作为广州美术学院美术史专业的奠基人之一,先生以渊博学识与高尚人格春风化雨,培育了大批优秀人才,其教育理念与学术精神,至今仍在滋养着这片学术园地。

“艺术和人”源自迟轲先生关于自身学习文艺和美学的回顾文章,凸显他从人与艺术、人与时代的整体观照角度去推进美术史研究和美术评论的特点,也提示我们如何在具体的历史语境下去思考前辈学人的人生历程和艺文事业。可以说,其跌宕起伏的学术生涯本身便构成我们回看那段美术史论研究的中国进程的可贵参照。

此次文献展,力图通过丰富的著述手稿、照片影像以及来往信函等,立体呈现迟轲先生作为学者、翻译家、评论家、教育家的人生轨迹与丰硕成果。研讨会则将包括迟轲先生艺术研究和教育成就评述、西方美术史论译介和研究以及20世纪中国美术评论等方面,通过分享有关学术前沿成果,以回顾和纪念这位杰出的美术史论前行者和广州美院美术史专业重要奠基人。

让我们共同走进迟先生所构建的“艺术和人”的博大世界,感受其思想的温度与力量,并以此为契机,推动中国美术史论研究在新时代的繁荣与发展。

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Professor Chi Ke, we hold the "Documentary Exhibition Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Chi Ke's Birth and a Symposium on the History and Theory of Chinese and Western Art" with profound respect and remembrance. This exhibition serves not only as a tribute to an eminent scholar, but also a re-recognition and re-departure of his remarkable thoughts and outstanding contributions.

Professor Chi Ke was a renowned art historian and critic, the former president of the Guangdong Society for Aesthetics, and a lifetime professor at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, he held key positions such as director of the Art Theory Teaching and Research Section and head of the Fine Arts Department at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, in 2004, he was honored with the title of "Outstanding Art Historian and Critic" by the China Artists Association. His in-depth research into the history of Western art has made enduring contributions to the development of Western art studies in China. His seminal work, "A History of Western Fine Arts", presented complex historical narratives in an accessible and engaging manner, offering Chinese readers a comprehensive and vivid panorama of Western artistic traditions, with cumulative print runs exceeding 300,000 copies, it has exerted a profound and lasting influence. Furthermore, his translations, introductions, and editorial work on key texts such as The Critical History of Western Art, Western Art Theories Collection, Dictionary of Subjects and Symbols in Art, and Rodin: The Man and His Art, with Leaves from His Note-book have laid a solid foundation for subsequent generations in the study and research of art history.

In addition to his contributions to the writing and translation of Western art history and theory, Professor Chi Ke has been deeply engaged in the critique of Chinese modern art. He regularly commented on current issues within the art community and has authored numerous critical essays on various artists. He was particularly skilled at analyzing artistic works within the framework of comparative studies between Chinese and Western cultures, while maintaining a perspective grounded in the local cultural and social context.

Professor Chi Ke served not only as a disseminator of knowledge but also as a pioneer in the construction of academic disciplines. His scholarly work and pedagogical efforts have laid a solid theoretical foundation and provided a clear practical pathway for the standardization, systematization, and localization of the art history discipline, as one of the founding figures of the Art History program at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, he has nurtured generations of outstanding talents with his profound scholarship and exemplary character, much like nourishing spring rain, his educational philosophy and academic spirit continue to inspire and shape the academic environment to this day.

The theme "Art and People" originates from Professor Chi Ke's reflective writings on his lifelong study of literature, art, and aesthetics, it highlights his approach of advancing the study of art history and criticism from a holistic perspective of people and art, people and the times, and also invites us to reconsider how we should evaluate the life journeys and cultural contributions of previous generations within specific historical frameworks. Indeed, Professor Chi Ke's distinguished academic career itself represents a significant reference point for understanding the development of Chinese art history and theoretical studies during that era.

This documentary exhibition seeks to offer a comprehensive portrayal of Professor Chi Ke’s life and achievements as a scholar, translator, critic, and educator through a rich collection of manus, photographs, videos, and correspondence. The symposium will encompass a comprehensive review of Professor Chi Ke's contributions to art research and education, the translation and study of Western art history and theory, and the critical examination of 20th-century Chinese art. Through the sharing of recent academic findings, the event seeks to reflect upon and honor Professor Chi Ke as a pioneering figure in the field of art history and theory, as well as a foundational contributor to the development of the art history discipline at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts.

By stepping into the expansive intellectual world of "Art and People" that he constructed, we can experience the warmth and enduring power of his thoughts. This exhibition also serves as an opportunity to further promote the prosperity and advancement of art history and theoretical research in contemporary China.

作为著名的美术史学者和译者,撰写、翻译、编辑、出版等是迟轲先生学术工作最为重要的部分,我们挑选了其部分个人或集体成果,有的著作尽可能呈现多个版本,以更为完整地体现迟先生学术成果出版及传播情况。

As a distinguished scholar in the field of art history and a dedicated translator, writing, translating, editing, and publishing constitute the core components of Professor Chi Ke's academic endeavors. A selection of his individual and collaborative works is presented here. For certain works, multiple editions have been included wherever possible, in order to provide a more comprehensive reflection of the publication and dissemination of Professor Chi Ke’s scholarly contributions.

Professor Chi Ke maintained active communication with scholars and professionals in the academic and art communities, through letters, he and his correspondents exchanged views on significant art and cultural issues, as well as on specific artistic works and publications. The letters presented here represent only a small portion of his extensive correspondence. Nevertheless, they offer insight into the scholar's broad network of colleagues and friends both domestically and internationally, and contribute to a deeper understanding of certain historical contexts.

Works and Reviews

迟轲先生为众多艺术家撰写了评论,这些评论成为我们研究中国现当代美术以及理解相应的历史背景的重要依据。同时他自己为了适应社会和教学研究需要也进行手绘和美术创作。此部分挑选了十多件迟先生曾做过评论的艺术家作品以及他亲绘的少量画作,创作与评述对照,以促进我们对其评论方法的认知。

Professor Chi Ke has authored numerous reviews of artists' works, which have become essential references for the study of modern and contemporary Chinese art and its historical background. Moreover, he himself also engaged in hand-drawing and art creation to adapt to the needs of social and teaching research. This section features more than ten artworks by artists he has reviewed and a small number of paintings he painted himself, by juxtaposing the artworks with Professor Chi Ke’s critiques, this presentation aims to enhance understanding of his analytical and interpretive approaches.

Speciality Construction

迟轲先生自1948年起在中原大学文艺研究室担任教学与研究工作,后相继参与中南文艺学院美术系筹建,任中南文艺学院美术工作队队长、中南美术专科学校教师。1958年任广州美术学院文艺理论教研室主任,1984年招收首届西方美术史研究生,1995年文艺理论教研室改设为美术学系,并于次年招收本科生,其为首任系主任。他是广州美术学院史论专业的奠基人之一,为美术学院理论学科和专业的建设作出了卓越贡献。

Professor Chi Ke served as a teacher and researcher at the Literature and Art Research Office of Chung Yuan University since 1948. Subsequently, he played a key role in the establishment of the Fine Arts Department at Central South College of Arts and Literature, and was the head of the Fine Arts Work Team and a faculty member at Central South College of Fine Arts. In 1958, he was appointed director of the Art Theory Teaching and Research Section at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. In 1984, he supervised the enrollment of the first cohort of postgraduate students specializing in Western art history. In 1995, the Art Theory Teaching and Research Section was restructured into the Fine Arts Department, and undergraduate recruitment commenced the following year, and Professor Chi Ke served as the inaugural head of the department. He was one of the founding figures of the art history and theory program at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, and made outstanding contributions to the construction of the theoretical disciplines and specialities of the academy.
