The Forbidden City in the Lens of Artist Huang Zhuo

The Forbidden City is not just a palace, but a three-dimensional history book. When the camera lens focuses on its beams, chīwěn (ornamental ridge ends), and red steps, what we see is not only "grandeur" but also the crystallization of countless craftsmen's wisdom, the unaltered cultural gene through dynastic changes.

This exhibition, titled "Encountering the Forbidden City," has selected over a hundred works to attempt, through the perspective of artist Huang Zhuo, to awaken the folds of time between the red walls and yellow tiles, the architectural wisdom in the dougong (bracket sets) and flying eaves, and the human warmth in the play of light and shadow, on the small frame of photographic paper.

Perhaps no one has ever imagined hearing sounds in the images of the Forbidden City.

It is a quiet resonance, humming in the depths of the gaze. Huang Zhuo, the photographer, was once a singer who stood under the spotlight. When the vibrations of her vocal cords became the soft clicks of the shutter, and the rise and fall of melodies merged with the rhythm of composition, she no longer just "saw" a palace but "listened" to it, using her lens to set the tone for the reverberations of six hundred years.

From the stage to the palace walls, she brings not only a shift in perspective but also a migration of the senses—transforming her profound understanding of rhythm, breath, and structure into a new visual language.

The palace endures through a thousand autumns, its order like a stilled harmony

In the eyes of artist Huang Zhuo, the layered corridors and halls unfold in space like a rigorous polyphony. Yet, within this near-absolute geometric order, she always finds a touch of fluid breath: a vermilion door slightly ajar, catching a sliver of light; a winding jade staircase leading the gaze into the distance. At the heart of the palace walls, a performer stands to the side, their bright yellow sleeves and half-folded fan like a deliberate decorative note—a burst of vivid life that artfully breaks the potential stiffness of symmetry. Here, order is no longer a cold framework in her lens, but a living structure to breathe in, full of inner tension.

Light and Shadow, Ink and Color" is an ode to color and light

Huang Zhuo, once a singer, deeply understands how breath shapes timbre. Thus, she chases light as if pursuing the most elusive yet essential melody. She lets the bright yellow glazed tiles shimmer under the oblique sunlight, while the stone lions in front of the hall are transformed into ink-black silhouettes of immense weight in backlight. The latticed windowpanes serve as natural viewfinders, framing the outside world into delicate paintings; a pool of still water inverts the palace, blending reality and illusion. What she captures are the fleeting traces of light and shadow colliding, flowing, and then vanishing between the dougong brackets and flying eaves—like a visual crescendo.

Mirroring the past and present, we gaze upon eternity in perfect harmony

When vision shifts from the grandeur of the external to the intricacy of the internal, a meticulousness akin to gongbi painting emerges. The mottled texture of bronze vats, the carved patterns of stone sculptures, and the cracks of ancient wood gain a tactile quality within the circular frame. The circle is her purest gaze, filtering out distractions and allowing objects to silently settle in time. These images, like slices of history, paradoxically achieve infinite extension in their extreme focus.

The flowing traces of time develop into monochrome poetry

Stripped of color, all things return to the purity of black, white, and gray. Light becomes a carving knife, turning into delicate threads that "flow" along the majestic ridges; it gathers into a hazy glow, making the heavy stone bases seem to dissolve in the air. At this moment, what is seen is no longer "objects" but the trajectory and speed of "time" in motion, the transparent scale cast by the soul of the architecture—constantly deforming yet eternally present—across the vast expanse of time.

And all will ultimately return to the frozen epic—the silent moment when snow falls upon the Forbidden City

The pure white veils all splendor, leaving only the skeleton and spirit of the architecture. Under Huang Zhuo’s waiting and capture, a touch of vermilion quietly crystallizes in the snow, while the bright yellow eaves stand out sharply against the pristine backdrop. Under the dominion of the snow, the myriad colors appear pure and harmonious—red, yellow, and white intertwine into a solemn yet warm visual symphony. At this moment, the specific memories of dynasties quietly recede, leaving only this world of clearly defined colors, a pure listening to order and eternity.

In the end, this visual invitation culminates in a resonance of the soul. Through the profound and unique lens of singer Huang Zhuo, the unspoken rhythm of the Forbidden City comes into view: the arc of the flying eaves is its pitch, the extension of shadows its rhythm, and the interplay of light and dark its harmony. As the shutter falls, the ancient halls and contemporary gaze engage in a silent yet grand dialogue that transcends time.
